About the Expert

There is great overlap between Pain Management and Physical Medicine treatment. Physical Medicine treatment is discussed in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Area of Expertise below. Although the goal for every patient is to treat the underlying cause of their medical complaint, this is not always possible. Reasons why a condition may not be 'cured' include cost, the fact we are dealing with a degenerative or progressive condition, state of current knowledge, or genetic makeup of the patient. When after treating the condition, the problem still exists and discomfort is present, the patient was given the option to have their symptom of pain treated. This included use of pain medications, psychological treatment for adjustment to illness, and physical modalities. At one time we ran a CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accredited outpatient “pain program. This included medicine treatment, education, psychology and social service, and physical therapy.

Expert's Profile

I am board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. I finished training at the
University of California at Irvine in 1974. I became Board Certified in PM&R in 1976 which was
the earliest I was able to sit for the examination. I established a private practice that year and
finished 45 years in private practice September, 2019, all in Indianapolis, In. The first 30+ years
my practice included both inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient physical medicine. The
inpatient practice included stroke, spinal injury and other catastrophic illness and injuries. I
was the Director of the Spinal Injury Service at Methodist Hospital and the Medical Director of
the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. The Physical Medicine practice included the treatment
of peripheral joints and spine.

My Physical Medicine practice included initial examinations and follow up appointments
to monitor progress, formulation of diagnoses, and treatment of the problems found.
Treatments included the prescription of medications, writing physical therapy orders, and doing
procedures. Procedures included Xray and ultrasound guided joint injections. The treatment of
spinal conditions included cervical, thoracic and lumbar zygapophsial (facet) joint injections,
medial branch test blocks and radio-frequency ablations. Spinal intra-vertebral disc treatments
included epidural injections and intra-discal injections. Also preformed were spinal cord
stimulation trials. At one time I supervised a CARF accredited outpatient pain program with
physical therapists, PhD psychologists and social workers, all in our office.
I was the first to do stem cell therapy in Central Indiana, utilizing both bone marrow
aspiration and adipose tissue to obtain stem cells. More recently placental derived products
were added I have done proliferative therapy and the use of non-steroidal medications into the
joint. Platelet rich plasma has been used for both spine and peripheral joints. I am the lead
investigator in a peer reviewed published study (Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT02097862)
Many of my inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient Physical Medicine patients suffered
injuries that resulted in legal action. Because of that , I am very familiar with the relationship
between Medicine and The Law. I have had many attorney conferences and as part of these
conferences reviewed medical records from other practitioners. I have been deposed on a
regular basis and have on occasion appeared in court as an expert. I have done many
Independent Medical Examinations. These involved reviewing records, examining the claimant
and authoring a detailed report answering the questions posed to me.
I am currently a member of The Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, The
American Academy of Orthopedic Medicine, The Indiana State Medical Association, and the
Spinal Intervention Society. I have taken all of the courses available to me for Xray and
ultrasound guided injections, including the SIS master class.
