About the Expert

Dr. Robert L. Stamper is an internationally recognized glaucoma expert and the Fortisure Distinguished Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine where he has practiced as a glaucoma and cataract expert for over 20 years.. In addition, he was the Director of the Glaucoma Service in the Department of Ophthalmology there from 1998 to 2014. He was Director of the Glaucoma Service at California Pacific Medical Center for over 25 years and served as the chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology there from 1987-1995. He was also director of the glaucoma service of the San Francisco Veterans Administration Health Center from 1999 through 2012. Dr. Stamper has extensive experience as a medical malpractice consultant and expert witness. He has also been involved as an expert witness in patent disputes. He has served as a consultant to several pharmaceutical firms and surgical device manufacturers.

Dr. Stamper has given numerous presentations at both national and international conferences and society meetings – most recently as visiting professor in Venezuela, Peru, New Zealand, India, Ethiopia, Harvard, Washington University St. Louis, Johns Hopkins and Yale. He was honored as the Shaffer lecturer in 2012. He is the senior author of the 7th and 8th editions of a prominent glaucoma textbook - Becker-Shaffer’s Diagnosis and Therapy of the Glaucomas. Dr. Stamper is also the recipient of many awards and honors, including being listed in the Best Doctors in America more than fifteen times, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. He has received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1908.

The Glaucoma Research Foundation conferred their highest honor, The Visionary Award, on Dr. Stamper in 2019. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles on glaucoma or cataracts and has served on the editorial or review boards of Ophthalmology,as well as those of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Eye Research, and Cataract and Refractive Surgery. His memberships include the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Ophthalmologic Society, the Glaucoma Society of the International Congress of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society of which he was the president in 1999-2000. Dr. Stamper was the American Glaucoma Society’s guest of honor at their 25th anniversary meeting. He is a past Director of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

He served for over 25 years with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology, was its President in 1984-5, and received its Statesmanship Award in 1989. He has served on the Board of Directors of That Man May See for over 10 years and on the Board of the Glaucoma Research Foundation for over 30 years. He has been Vice President of that organization. Dr. Stamper has trained almost 200 residents and about 50 glaucoma fellows from around the world. He is also the recipient of the Helen Keller Award of the Lions Eye Foundation, Distinguished Alumni Award of Washington University, the Troutman Master Teacher award of State University of New York and the Kimura Teaching award at UCSF. His recent research interests include drug and surgical device trials, new diagnostic tests for glaucoma and screening for and treatment of glaucoma in the resource challenged parts of the world.
