Expert's Profile

Robert J. Schaal is currently a Consultant and Forensic Investigator for Gulf Coast Fire Investigation, Research, and Education, LLC, a company owned and operated by he and his wife Lisa. He retired from his position as a Special Agent with the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in October 2014, having served since July 1987. He began his career as a field agent assigned in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1995, he entered the ATF Certified Fire Investigator Program, which he competed in 1997. In 2001, he transferred to an ATF Headquarters assignment serving as a Program Manager in the State and Local Training Branch where he was responsible for the delivery of fire/arson related training programs to state and local officers including the ATF Arson for Prosecutors Seminar, Advanced Origin and Cause/Courtroom Techniques Seminar and the Complex Arson Investigative Techniques Seminar. Additionally he participated in the assessment of fire/arson investigative capabilities in the Republic of Colombia and the Republic of Latvia and participated in several custom training deliveries in the Republic of Colombia based on the needs identified in the assessment. In April of 2004, he was promoted to the position of Chief, Arson Training Branch where he maintained oversight of all arson/fire investigation-training programs presented by ATF including training of the ATF CFI’s. He returned to the New Orleans Field Division as a Supervisory Special Agent in July of 2005 and was promoted to the position of Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the New Orleans Field Division in January of 2011, serving in this position until his retirement. Throughout his career he has attended numerous fire investigation training and education seminars and has coordinated and participated as an instructor in numerous training programs both inside of United States and Internationally. He has been actively involved in the Louisiana Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators previously serving on the Board of Directors and advancing to the position of Chapter President. He served on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Arson Investigators for 11 years, including service as President during the 2009/2010. He continues to serve on the steering committee of the IAAI distance learning initiative CFITrainer.net and has served as a program development advisor, contributor of support materials, and a presenter. He has authored a paper distributed on CFITrainer.net entitled “A Users Guide for the CFI Calculator and Fire Dynamics Equations.” He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama.
