Expert's Profile

I started Space Analytics in 1989 because it was evident certain recurring real estate problems were caused not by poor financial, management, or marketing decisions but by poor spatial decisions. Real estate, design and planning professionals are supposed to understand space but each field has its own narrow understanding. One of my goals has been to develop and publish a combination of knowledge and techniques that will improve the ability to solve these problems and I have been doing this for over 20 years.

Twenty years ago, I was interviewed on American Public Radio about my work on problem shopping centers and the American Real Estate Society (ARES) awarded me a manuscript prize for showing how the functional obsolescence of a luxury mall built for $30 million resulted in its sale three years later for $7.8 million. I was the expert witness in the first Colorado access taking case in over 20 years in which a court agreed with a plaintiff that there had been a substantial impairment of access.

ARES awarded me another manuscript prize in using shape network™ analysis to show how changed spatial patterns significantly diminished the value of a property in an access taking. My testimony in a major public forum case was featured on Court TV: Burt Matthews of The Homestand Flyer and Robert Lewis of The Game Program v. The Denver Metropolitan Major League Baseball Stadium District and The Colorado Rockies Baseball Club, Ltd. I gave expert testimony in William Hablinski Architecture vs. Amir Construction Inc. et al., which received the largest award to a plaintiff for architectural copyright infringement.

I have a BS from the University of Illinois, Urbana, an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, an MSc (Architecture) (thesis distinction) from University College London, and Doctor of Technology, (higher doctorate) from the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland. I am a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors,

Currently I’m Part-time Professor of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology where I teach in the PhD program. Recently I was an Academic Fellow of the Urban Land Institute, ALDAR Dean of Business at the Higher Colleges of Technology in the United Arab Emirates and before that Head of the Real Estate Management and Development Group at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, one of the largest graduate real estate programs in Europe. Before starting Space Analytics, I was Visiting Science and Engineering Research Council Fellow at the University of London and taught at Arizona State University where I started the joint Master of Architecture/MBA program and at the University Colorado where I was Associate Dean of Architecture and Planning.

My current pro bono activity includes board membership with a new think tank, the American Economic Development Institute (www.aedi.us) and the Center for Sustainable Urbanism, which runs an architectural study program in Italy for high school students (www.ciao-cfsu.org). I was previously on the board of directors of the MIT Enterprise Forum of Colorado, the City Club of Denver and a trustee of the Denver Architecture Foundation. I was a paid board member of The Homburg Academy and Range-Play Golf.

I have been a keynote speaker, given dozens of lectures to professionals, academics and the general public, published over 30 articles and reviews in scientific, professional, trade, and art journals and wrote a column for 10 years on real estate, architecture and urban design for a weekly business newspaper. I enjoy what I do.
